What 22 Years in Business Taught Me About Marketing and Sales

Origin story blog

By Megan Lynch Adler

It’s been 22 years since I started Sublime, and looking at where we are now, I feel incredibly proud of how far we’ve come. We’ve doubled in size since last year. Doubled. Not because of luck or chance, but because of the work we’ve put in and the mindset that’s always driven us. This success has caused me to reflect on how we got here, and while every company has an origin story, I realized recently that I’ve never really shared ours.

Sublime started with hustle, grit, and curiosity. In the wake of the dot-com crash and 9/11, I was fresh out of college with a communications degree and no roadmap. As a result, I took on whatever work I could find. That meant designing newsletters, writing for Bay Area newspapers, and slowly building a business from the ground up. I had never worked for anyone else, which meant every part of running and growing the company had to be learned on the fly: from selling and storytelling to hiring, scaling, and asking the right questions.

That mindset of constantly learning, listening, and leveling up is what still defines us two decades later. As Sublime grew from a one-woman show to a team of seasoned marketers and strategists, we realized something fundamental: marketing only works when it’s tied to real business outcomes. Because we’ve always had to sell ourselves, we know how to craft stories, messaging, and campaigns that actually drive growth. Today, Sublime is more than a branding or design firm. We’re a fractional marketing partner that helps companies sell more by connecting the dots between story, strategy, and sales.

Why we exist
We’ve been on both sides of the table. We’ve had to sell, pitch, fund, and grow. That’s why everything we do starts with strategy. We don’t guess. We understand the angles. We help you frame your message in a way that resonates, both internally and externally, so sales and marketing can stop speaking two different languages and start closing deals together.

The truth is, marketing can’t live in a silo. Neither can sales. They need each other and they need a shared foundation built around your customer, your story, and your goals.

What we do
We offer three core services, all designed to help you sell more and sell smarter:

  • GTM foundations: We build or refine your go-to-market story and brand design so they actually connect with customers, and give your brand something solid to stand on.
  • Fractional marketing team: Need to scale your marketing but not ready to hire a full team? We can plug in where you need us whether that’s in execution, strategy, or both.
  • Sales enablement: From pitch decks to positioning frameworks, we equip your sales team with the tools and messages that convert.

We’re not just here to make things look pretty (though we’re pretty good at that, too). We’re here to have a meaningful impact on your revenue, your growth, and your ability to connect with customers.

Built by doing the work
I’ve never had a full-time job working for anyone else. Everything I’ve learned has come from doing it, asking for help, making mistakes, and staying open to growth. That mindset is baked into how we work at Sublime. Every mistake is a lesson. Every win is a data point. We get better every time.

Yes, last year we doubled in size. And guess what? This year, we’re on track to do it again. We’re maturing our processes, bringing in exceptional talent, and focusing on what we’re best at: helping companies grow through smart strategy, great storytelling, and marketing that actually drives sales.

We know we’re living in a time where teams are stretched and budgets are tight, which is why Sublime is here to give you the flexibility to do more with less, while making it count.

Need marketing that actually helps you sell? Let’s talk.

We build stories, strategies, and sales tools that connect the dots and drive results.
